“When you have come to the edge Of all light that you know And are about to drop off into the darkness Of the unknown, Faith is knowing One of two things will happen: There will be something solid to stand on or You will be taught to fly.” ~Patrick Overton. I want to have faith. I want to believe that all decisions I have made in the past are right. I want to believe I did the right thing or made the right choice. I want to know that in the future, I will continue to make good decisions- decisions that will lead me to happiness, decisions that will lead me to prosperity, decisions that will lead my children to fulfillment. But I cannot know that and I cannot say for sure that everything I have done is right, I only know that what I have done has led me right here, to this moment, right now. And I have to have faith that right here and right now is where I'm supposed to be.
It's not easy. I doubt what I have done and what I will do, I doubt that all decisions have been the best, that everything I've done has been right. I doubt that I made the best choice, I doubt that I will in the future. But I can't know that for sure, and I can't forecast the future, but what I can do is have faith. Because faith is the one thing that can get you through the blandness or the darkness or the happiness of your life. When things are bland you wonder if you are doomed to mediocrity. When life is dark you wonder if you will ever step back into the light. When you are happy you may wonder how long it will last, if this happiness is fleeting or if it is steady.
But through all of it, if you have faith, you will feel more solid, you will feel more capable, you will feel free. With faith, in something bigger than yourself or yourself alone, you can know that you will make it through. Because you have before. Because you have been down a dark path, because you have stepped into the light. Because you have shaken off mediocrity and you have shunned convention and you have chosen as best you could for where you were and you have made it to the other side.
You should have faith. You should know that when you have no one else to lean on, you can lean on me, you can lean on your past, you can lean on that inner strength that got you through before. So when you are feeling most lost and when you are feeling most joyful, when you doubt where you are and how you got here and where you're going, you can close your eyes, you can know that when all else fails, you will be safe. You can know that when you feel like there is nothing in your life or too much in your life, when you feel ungrateful, when you feel most blessed, when you feel most wandering and when you feel most disconnected, you can reach out and ask for help and you can have faith that you are not alone.
