Possibilities in a new year

I think we all look to the new year as a time to start over, start fresh, start something new. We look forward to shedding the old, to brush off what the old year saddled upon us and to spring into a new time with a new-found joy and new-found vigor. But for some it's not that easy. For some, looking at a new year means looking down another long road, looking down another path to travel, looking at the same events playing over again.

And for those I say, that when all else is lost, when you can't seem to think of anything to be thankful for, when the days have worn you down and you are weary from your journey, remember that one thing is constant, one thing is certain, one thing is true: the possibility of change. Because when you have nothing else to hope for, you can hope for possibility; the possibility of greatness, the possibility of love, the possibility that things can and do change.

We may not be able to see what life has in store for us, and maybe it's the giving over of that control that lets us be just a little more hopeful. Because in the end, what roads we may travel are partly in our control and completely beyond our control. We cannot know what tomorrow will bring. We cannot know what will happen next month, next year; but we can hope for something different, we can hope that our hard work will pay off, we can hope that this next year will bring possibilities we cannot conceive of today.

And that's the brilliant thing about the passing of a year. When we stood at the precipice of last year's end and this year's beginning, could we have predicted what life had in store for us? Maybe... partly.. but certainly we were thrown some curve balls. Certainly there were times this year when we wondered how we could get through, and certainly there were times when we wondered if we could be any happier, and most of those times we could not have foreseen, we could not have predicted, we could not have planned. It was in the living of our lives that the possibilities accrued and became reality. It was in the walking through each day that our life unfolded before us. So for this year's and and the beginning of the next, I wish you all the possibility of joys and happiness and delightful unpredictability, so that at this time next year we can look back at how our life astonished us, and we can be grateful for that.

After all, this is the life.
