Over the past few weeks, I have had friends suddenly pass away, suddenly get bad medical news, suddenly lose a parent, suddenly lose their spouse. And while this turn of bad news has me saddened for my friends and their loved ones, it also has me scared and thinking. Because we often say "life is too short" but do we really embrace and understand that? Or do we really treat our days and our loves and our lives as if they will continue forever, taking them for granted, believing they will never end? For most people, myself included, I think the answer, more times than not, is yes.
So today I say, what are you waiting for? Get on with living the life you want, get on with telling people how you feel, get on with deciding to embrace what you have, get on with loving your life. And in that same vein, it's also time to get rid of things- those items in your life that clutter your house, those habits in your life that create more difficulty, those people in your life who cause you more pain than happiness. Because when we look back at our lives, the questions we may ask are whether we laughed as much as we could, whether we loved as well as we could, whether we lived as best we could, so today is the day to start answering.
Now none of this is to say that reckless behavior should rule the day, because planning for the future is also always wise. But it is to ask that in planning for the future, what are you doing today toward that end? What are you embracing to make sure today is well-lived, what are you discarding that holds you back? What are you doing to make today not only a blessing in itself but also a stepping stone on the pathway to a happier future? Because we never know the time we have ourselves or with the ones we love, so complaining about things we have control over serves no purpose when action is called for. Remember it is up to us to determine the very best way to honor and rejoice and delight in what is here now and not wait for time that may not come.
