With the new year here, there is a lot of focus on what we should be changing in our lives: what is wrong in our lives, what we need to improve on, what we could be doing better. But all of that focus on the negative is discouraging and disheartening. So maybe, in this new year, we should focus instead on what we're doing right.
Waking up thinking about what we have planned for the day that excites us; going to sleep thinking of what we did that made us proud. What it is we did to make our lives better, what moments brought us happiness, what we are grateful for. Whether those positive moments were creating a real connection with someone, or getting a load of laundry in, or just getting ourselves out the door to work, it's better than berating ourselves for what we did wrong.
Maybe in the focusing on what's right, no matter how small that "right" is, we will find ourselves doing more "right" things. Making more "right" choices, and taking more "right" steps toward our future. Perhaps if we beat ourselves up less and prop ourselves up more, we will feel better and do better and be better. We will not be perfect, no one is, but more often than not, we can do good for ourselves.
