In the middle of tumultuous times, when it feels like nothing is steady or sure, one thing we can do is try to find our center. Try to find the place and the space where you feel calm, even just for a moment.
But how to do that? The first step is to take a breath. Notice that. Take another. And try to still your mind until you can find one thing, no matter how small, to remind yourself that now, in this moment, you are ok. It may be putting on a piece of jewelry that was given to you, it may be writing down just one thing that you are grateful for, it may be calling a friend or a family member. All of these little steps can take the panic out of your chest and make you feel safe.
Because the truth is that we can't predict the future, and unless the police are at the door or you are rushing to the hospital, there is something, right now, that can center us. There is something, right now, that can make us feel steady. There is something, right now, to bring us the calm and the peace that while we may not know the future, we do know that we can and will weather any storm, and we are stronger than we think.
