Talking it out

I'm in the business of talking. Every day, for most of the day, I sit and I listen and offer my opinion. I argue my side, I counter the other, but in the midst of all of this talking, I have found that sometimes there are no words to make you feel better, sometimes talking it out just tires you out. Sometimes there is loss, like in divorce, that cannot be healed with words.

When things don't go our way, many times we think if we just say a few magic words, if we express ourselves differently, if we speak to exactly what it is the other person wants to hear, we can take back the past, we can change where we are today. But what if the other person doesn't want to hear? What if they have no words back to you? What if talking doesn't really do anything at all?

Sometimes I think we talk to try to fill the silence, to try to fill the hole we have inside. We speak just to have something to hold on to. We use the words as a ladder to bring us up from where we have sunk. We literally cry out in desperation to just please say something to make it better. But there are no words to help.

Because it's those times that we just need to sit where we are. To feel all that we have lost. To grieve for what we had but have no longer. It's those times that being quiet and just being sad are really what we need. The moments where we lose our breath are a signal to us to stop talking, since as much as we'd like the words to heal, there is no adequate speech.

This is the life.
