Too Good To Be True

I was struck the other day by being happy. Just really feeling content and grateful and solid, and then I had a sudden bout of panic that perhaps things were going along too well, that I was missing some red flag or I was failing to pay attention to some issue lurking in the shadows. And then I stopped myself, because thinking something may be too good to be true may be exactly what is wrong.

I think there are times when we think about the worst outcome for a situation so that we can be prepared and we can handle what's coming around the bend. And for those of us who have had one or two (or six) wrenches thrown at us in our lives, who have lived through extreme difficulties, who have had loss or devastation, that mindset can be easy to shake.

But instead of having that mindset, I'm going to try harder to accept that something good can just be good. To appreciate that nothing is too good to be true because good things do happen and good things can happen. And maybe it's when we let down our guard and let the good in and relish and enjoy what we have, that even more good can happen and even more happiness can be had. Because it can't be that life is simply a series of events that throw us for a loop; rather it can be that life gives us challenges but also rewards us with delight. Delight to focus on, delight to revel in, delight to give us hope for the here and now, and for the future as well.

After all, this is the life.

  1. Delightful post. I think there's sunshine in your future. With a change of heart comes change in life. I too lived everyday waiting for the shoe to drop, preparing for the worst. Then one day I decided to expect the best. Wishing you all the best.
