Foxhole friends

I was talking to my friend Jessica the other day about different "levels" of friends. We all have them. Friends we work with, friends we know from our childhood, friends who are parents of our children's friends, friends who are neighbors, friends who will be in our lives forever, and friends who may not be in our lives for long but who still make a difference. And then there are our "foxhole" friends- those friends who, when the chips are down, when you need someone in your corner, when you are most desperate, when you have nowhere else to turn, when all hope seems lost, when you can't see 5 feet in front of you, these are the friends you turn to. Your foxhole friends are those friends who you may see often or only once in a great while, and yet, you know they have your back. Accepting responsibility

There are certainly plenty of events and happenings during your life that you cannot control; where fate takes over or bad luck or good luck or mixed luck comes in. Where you happen to be in the right place at the right or wrong time, where nothing you could have done would have changed the outcome. And yet, if we are really honest, there are probably fewer of those times that exist than we would like to admit. Because admitting that we had some control over the outcome means taking responsibility for our actions, and that's not always easy to do. Being responsible and admitting our role in events is not only the right thing to do, it's the freeing thing to do. Because assessing our role and taking responsibility for what we did or didn't do, allows us to think differently and act differently over time. This time next year

It's around this time each year when I think: where will I be at this time next year? I look back at the year before, I think how time moves so quickly, and I sit in wonder at just how much changed in the span of 365 days. Last year was a year of big changes for me and for my family. Settling into a new home, still trying to figure out where things fit in the space, what the new routines were, where to shop, and eat. Settling kids into college and grad school, missing friends, making friends, crying tears of anxiety or sadness or excitement or relief. Starting at a new firm and moving from a workplace where I knew everything, to navigating new ways and ideas. Feeling challenged and motivated, feeling scared but supported. It was a lot, this last year. It was filled with so many emotions, and often more than one or two or six at a time.
