Forgive and forgo

On July 8th, Oprah posted a podcast about her interview with author, Terry McMillan . The episode was about forgiveness. Oprah said that forgiveness is not about pretending something didn't happen, but letting go of the hope that something would have turned out differently. This same episode happened when my friend and law partner, Alan Freed, sent out an email about the difference between forego and forgo . I don't think this was a coincidence. Alan explained that "forgo" means to do without where "forego" means something comes before something else. It struck me that that same lesson applies to forgiveness. Because in order to release yourself from your anger, in order to allow yourself to live in the present, in order to allow your soul to thrive and your voice to be raised and your feelings to soar, you have to allow yourself freedom. Foxhole friends

I was talking to my friend Jessica the other day about different "levels" of friends. We all have them. Friends we work with, friends we know from our childhood, friends who are parents of our children's friends, friends who are neighbors, friends who will be in our lives forever, and friends who may not be in our lives for long but who still make a difference. And then there are our "foxhole" friends- those friends who, when the chips are down, when you need someone in your corner, when you are most desperate, when you have nowhere else to turn, when all hope seems lost, when you can't see 5 feet in front of you, these are the friends you turn to. Your foxhole friends are those friends who you may see often or only once in a great while, and yet, you know they have your back. Kudos to my ex-husband

My ex-husband just got an amazing job. One he has worked toward for many years, and one that is well-deserved. It’s not often that one former spouse is excited and happy for the other, but in this case it’s true. I’m happy for him and for what his career has become, and where his future is going to take him. It was not easy and it took a long time, but he stuck with it and has realized a dream. Now, to be sure, we don't always get along and we don't always agree. We don't always have the same ideas about what is best for our children, what they should or shouldn't do, or what we should or shouldn't do; but when we disagree, we try to keep it between us. We have tried hard, and succeeded most times, to keep the children out of the middle. And we have tried and mostly succeeded to present a united front when our kids needed it.
